What are sign stand off fixings?

The short answer is that they are mounting hardware for sighs and other rigid print. If you see a sign that appears to be fixed but a small distance from a wall then it is likely the sign has been attached to the wall using some form of sign stand off fixings.

The fixings are known by a variety of names such as sign stand-offs, sign supports, standoffs

Why do I need sign stand off fixings?

Sign standoffs are not the only way to mount signs on walls. They can be fixed directly on the wall or you can use various adhesive-based options. But using sign standoffs creates a professional and smart look, as well as providing a method of supporting the weight of the sign.

Which ones are right for me?

There is no ‘correct’ answer to the questions but there are a couple of considerations to begin with. Firstly, the thickness of the sign panel and secondly the distance from the wall that you want to mount the sign. Check the specification of the sign standoffs to find the maximum panel depth it will support. Its width will tell you how far away from the wall your sign will be. The choice at this stage will decide what diameter of holes you’ll need on your sign.

Which finish do I need?

Two choices are purely personal – the diameter of the standoff and the finish. Most sign standoffs are made from aluminium and powder coated in a finish. Standard finishes include Polished Chrome, Satin Chrome, Brass and Black. If cost is an issue chose the lowest price product. If look is important choose the finish that compliments or contrasts with the wall colour or the environment where the sign is to be mounted.

Are all sign stand off fixings the same?

No. Like any product the parts are manufactured to different standards. It’s unlikely you’ll be able to tell by looking or holding the standoff – and you certainly cannot tell if you buy online. So choose a reputable supplier, and make sure you can return them if the quality is poor. It is important that the fixings are strong enough to take and retain the weight of the sign. In addition, poor quality finishes will tarnish quickly. They’ll look shoddy and may need to be replaced.

How many standoffs will I need?

When you are purchasing these sign stand offs, remember that you want more than one – you should need one for each corner of the sign IF your sign is less than four square feet. If it is, you may need to install them half way between points or every 18” or so. In addition, remember that the caps to these screw in to the barrel, and allows for a 1/4”sign to hang.
